Today the Cubs faced off against Bellarmine at 4:00 p.m. at Harvard Westlake. The Cubs had a slow start as their opponents opened the game with a quick goal. The Cubs showed some resilience by scoring two goals (Vavic both times) to end the quarter. The Cubs had a few golden opportunities but had trouble converting in front of goal. The second quarter proved to be a deadlock with both teams scoring 3 goals in the period. The Cubs worked the ball around to score early in the quarter (Pernecky). Unfortunately, the Cubs gave up a penalty and subsequent goal. They responded well with a sweet long-distance goal (Kranz) but lost concentration defensively and give up another goal straight after scoring. After a lengthy buildup, the Cubs were on the score sheet for the fifth time of the afternoon (Engstrom). Bellarmine came back a few minutes later and scored a goal in the lower right hand corner, the second goal scored in that spot of the quarter. The game was very back and forth with a score of 5-4 at the half. The third quarter came around and the Cubs finally began to show what they could really do. A few minutes into the quarter, the Cubs scored a well-worked goal (Agliozzo) to earn a two-goal cushion. The Cubs stepped up defensively and were forcing Bellarmine into more difficult shots. In the time that the Cubs upped the ante the defensively, they also notched their eighth goal of the match (Kranz). Bellarmine finally got back on the scoring side of things with a goal off a deflection after a block. The Cubs, however, remained unfazed at conceding a goal as they answered with a goal of their own (Altmayer). Late in the quarter, the Cubs suffered an ejection, but they still looked strong as they scored their ninth goal of the game. The last quarter of the game was a goalless affair with the Cubs playing staunch defense while playing possession water polo to eat time off the clock. The team did receive an ejection but remained poised in their approach. The final score was 9-5.
