Loyola won the Classic back in 2021 during head coach Damaine Powell's first season at the helm. Then-senior point guard Jalen Cox '22 was named the tourney MVP.
SEASON OUTLOOK: This year's 2023-24 squad will have a new look, as nine of the 17 players on this year's roster are new to the Varsity level (five juniors, two sophomores, two freshmen). However, Loyola will be led once again by the strength of its upperclassmen.
Senior forward Hugh Vandeweghe '24, one of the league's best shooters and an NBPA Top 100 Camp invitee, will be a go-to around the perimeter and in the paint as the Cubs' tallest player. Last year's All-Mission League honoree Jonas de Krassel '24 will be sidelined for some time due to an ankle injury, but is expected back before the start of league play in January.
Those two seniors, who have seen significant Varsity playing time since their sophomore years, are joined by guard Nico George '24 and forwards Joe Mirner, Zane Nur '24, and Jack Chittick '24—all of whom are expected to make significant contributions in their final year wearing the Blue & White. Also returning is junior forward Kai Klein '25, who started a handful of games for Loyola last season, and sophomore sharpshooter Quincy Watson '26. As a freshman in 2022-23, Watson led the Cubs in scoring in 15 different games and this year will man the point guard spot.
