Today, the Cubs faced off against Miramonte at 10 a.m. The Cubs won the game by a score 11-7.
The team came out flat in the first quarter giving up an early goal. The team responded with a beautiful bar-in shot right after. A few minutes later the Cubs conceded again after receiving an ejection. The team came right back with another goal in response, but continued the poor show of defense as they gave up a third goal for the third consecutive defensive sequence. Coach Healy made a few substitutions which led to two more quick goals from the Cubs. Though the team looked a little lost to start the game, they still led 4-3.
The Cubs came out in the second quarter looking much like the first, failing to capitalize on a few ejections from Miramonte’s side. The Cubs finally broke through again after several minutes with a shot from about a yard out. They then looked like they finally found a rhythm as a sweet pass found its way across the field for an easy tap-in goal, the third of the quarter and seventh of the game. Miramonte receives an ejection, but the Cubs again fail to take advantage of the opportunity to score. The Cubs defense makes a great play giving the team an easy goal off of a 2 on 1 situation. The Cubs win the quarter 4-0 and take an 8-3 lead.
The third quarter opened with a well-worked goal from the Cubs, who were now starting to build some real momentum. The team’s defense stifled Miramonte’s offense and got out quickly to hit the back of the net once more. Miramonte’s coach had seen enough and decided to call timeout. The Cubs came out of the timeout looking a little shaky as they gave up a goal almost immediately. A few minutes later, the defense falls apart and Miramonte’s on the score sheet once more. The Cubs looked a little rattled as they were receiving constant pressure from their opponents. After a few minutes of solid shots on goal, Loyola finally caved and gave up a third goal of the period. They ended the third quarter with a score of 10-6.
The Cubs opened the fourth quarter working the ball around well but not creating much in terms of solid opportunities. Straight out of a Cubs timeout, the team defended fiercely and used the full shot clock the next possession. A smooth steal on defense got the Cubs another goal from a one on one with the goalie. The Cubs ate away at the clock on offense and seemed to resolve their defensive issues this quarter. Straight out of another Cubs timeout, the team shaved off all thirty seconds of the shot clock, took the ball back quickly and shaved another 30 second off. After a Miramonte thirty second timeout, the Cubs gave up a final goal though there was no real chance to mount a comeback with under a minute left. The final score was 11-7.
