Loyola’s third game of the season against Cathedral was the “battle for LA.” Going into the game, tensions and spirits were high. Unfortunately, Loyola’s ambition was not enough to overcome the Cathedral Phantoms, but it did come close. The game ended with a final score of 17-13 in favor of the Phantoms.
A large Loyola crowd cheered on and supported the team, and the air was buzzing with anticipation for a very hyped-up matchup. The Cubs started out strong with a 13-yard run by RB Harrison Allen ‘22 putting them up 7-0 in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Cubs trailed 7-10 after a field goal and touchdown by Cathedral. The first half ended with a score of 7-10 in favor of the Phantoms. Cathedral scored to make the score 17-7 at the start of the second half. WR Peter Vanis ‘22 caught a first down pass to put the Cubs on the 48-yard line and set up RB Harrison Allen ‘22 to run in a 44-yard touchdown in the next couple of plays. The touchdown brought the score to 13-17, close enough to give the Cubs a chance to win.
With the third quarter coming to an end, Cathedral was on their fourth down and only needed 1-yard to score. On Cathedral’s last attempt at scoring on the drive, OLB Dominick Belisle ‘20 forced an incomplete pass, ending Cathedral’s drive. Loyola had possession going into the 4th quarter, but the ball was turned over on downs. Loyola’s defense successfully stopped Cathedral and started their final drive with 1:34 left on the clock. After a big play by TE Brendan Pernecky ‘20, the Cubs had an opportunity to score. The momentum was electrifying, but Cathedral made an interception and ended the game by kneeling. Throughout the game, the Cubs had their moments of strength and weakness. The loss was difficult for the team, but they sent a clear message to the community: do not lose faith in them.
